About Us

My name is Alan Shero

Alan Shero is a photographer based in northern Alabama.  He holds an Associates of Applied Science in Photography and Film Communications.  He has worked for commercial studios and as a darkroom technician for commercial photo labs.  During his time as a darkroom technician, Alan became friends with a local landscape photographer, Charles Seifried ( seifriedphoto.com ), who opened his eyes to the creative possibilities of landscape photography.  Charles was kind enough to mentor Alan and show him some of the wild and scenic areas of Alabama and Tennessee.  During this time, Alan became passionate about both landscape photography and the natural world; throwing himself wholeheartedly into his photography and the outdoors.

While Alan's career path changed over time, photography has remained his true passion and a constant part of his life.  Today he uses both digital and analog methods to capture and process his images; with large format black and white photography remaining an important aspect of his work.  While the many technological advances in photography have provided incredible tools and almost limitless image processing possibilities, he prefers to work in the tradition of straight or natural landscape photography.   Alan has been greatly inspired by many of the outstanding photographers of the American West and the west coast school of photography.  Over the years he has developed a love affair with the American West, particularly the southwest, but the southern Appalachians hold a special place in his heart.  Alan's work showcases images from around the United States, however he is constantly drawn back east to the beauty of the southern Appalachians and surrounding foothills.

His body of work, Watersong, encompases more than fifteen years of black and white photographs showcasing the waters of the southern Appalachians.  This body of work holds deep significance for Alan, as some of these locations are where he made his first successful landscape photographs and where he began to learn that a photograph could be more than a picture.
